Focused ultrasound can help assist, even in challenging gastrointestinal conditions.

There are many challenges in treating the regions of the gastrointestinal tract, including respiratory movement, peristatic movement and the presence of intra-luminal air. These items make a stable target difficult and can interfere with the transmission of ultrasound waves. Yet, these obstacles are being addressed with mechanisms to minimize their impact. The effort is worth the challenge, as the survival from some of these cancers is among the lowest, and improvements here will help a lot of people. Other than the non-US approval for pancreatic cancer, the bulk of this work is still at an early stage.
