Abstract

The palliative treatment of lower back pain by targeting the sacroiliac joints (SI) is a very promising new application of MRgFUS. However, this new application has not been approved by the FDA due to safety concerns. Furthermore, the effectiveness of MRgFUS in this context has not been fully investigated. Thus, the objective of this proposal is to determine the safety and effectiveness of MRgFUS for SI joint ablation using a swine model. We hypothesized that MRgFUS is a safe and effective tool to ablate the SI joint. Our hypothesis has been formulated on the basis of our own preliminary data that suggest that MRgFUS is a very safe and effective tool for this application. The clinical impact of the proposed research is that once safety and effectiveness has been established, this new treatment option can be quickly translated to the clinic because patient safety and treatment effectiveness can be assured. To this end, we proposed the following Specific Aims: 1. To determine the safety of MRgFUS palliation of the SI joint in 9 swine and 2. To determine the effectiveness of MRgFUS palliation of the SI joint in 9 swine. The approach is innovative, because MRgFUS would be a new and non-invasive alternative treatment to currently used radiofrequency ablation. The proposed research is significant, because it is expected to vertically advance the clinical applications of MRgFUS
