HIFU Prostate Treatment Debated by Urologists

AUA 2016Patient selection for high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) prostate treatment was featured as one of the opening plenary sessions for the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association, held earlier this month in San Diego.

Approximately 2,000 attendees filled the Friday event entitled “High Intensity Focused Ultrasound – Hope or Hype?” which was moderated by Dr. Michael O. Koch.

After four expert presentations on the FDA path to approval, the Canadian experience, the European experience, and an overview of instrumentation and techniques, the session concluded with a panel discussion on patient selection for focal treatment, hemi-ablation, and whole gland ablation.

“Urologists are looking at the data and listening to the differing opinions. They are interested in studies comparing the side effects profiles of HIFU to cryotherapy, laser ablation, and radiation,” said Foundation Chief Medical Officer Tim Meakem, MD
